The importance of a considered recruitment strategy

In the rush to fill a gap, it’s easy for organisations to jump straight into advertising a role—especially when time feels tight and workloads are stretched. But we’ve seen time and time again that a reactive approach to recruitment can end up wasting more time (and money) than it saves.

Let us share a recent example.
A growing organisation we work with found themselves needing to hire a new manager. Keen to keep things moving, they drafted a job description and pushed it out to a few external job boards almost overnight. But in the rush, a few key steps were missed.

They hadn’t spoken to their internal team first.
They hadn’t considered whether someone already in the business might be ready to step up.
And they hadn’t mapped out a strategy that included their own networks, employee referrals, or even a post on their social media channels.

Within days, they realised their mistake. Internal team members felt overlooked and disengaged. The role hadn’t been advertised widely, which meant they couldn’t tap into their own audience or promote the opportunity under their employer brand. They also didn’t have time to brief recruiters properly or build a decent pipeline.

The result? A poor-quality shortlist, and ultimately, no appointable candidate. A huge opportunity missed—and the role remained unfilled.

This is a common tale, and one we’re hearing more of. The pressure to act fast can sometimes override the need to plan well.

But here’s the truth: sometimes slowing down is the best way to speed up.

Taking a step back to consider your recruitment strategy isn’t a luxury—it’s essential. That means:
Checking in with your current team before looking outside
Clarifying what success in the role looks like
Deciding the best routes to market
And using your own brand and networks to attract great people who share your values

It doesn't have to be complicated—but it does have to be intentional.
