A new initiative has been developed by a group of employers in the Humber region, supported by Humber HR People to recognise their commitment to tackling health and well-being at work, following a recent and comprehensive study by UK Government that suggests improvement in well-being will result in improved workplace performance: in profitability (financial performance), labour productivity and the quality of outputs or services.

Rachel Dackombe, Head of People from Victoria Plum, who employ more than 300 people in the region, explained why they are backing the launch:

As regional employers, we wanted to take a proactive and collaborative approach to Employee Well-being. We are delighted to be one of the founding members of the group and are fully behind the principles of supporting our colleagues to be the very best they can be”

The standard has an agreed framework laying out what is expected of an employer if they wish to be recognised as having a positive approach and attitude towards improving the lives and mental well-being of their colleagues. These have been set by 26 representatives from the employer led group, which includes involvement with private sector employers and public bodies, such as NHS, Hull University and Humberside Police Force.

Each participating organisation is asked to undertake a self-assessment based on six standards and produce an Action Plan indicating what they intend to take to meet the individual criteria over a 12-month period. The organisation then has 12 months to demonstrate the impact on productivity, absence, culture, attrition rates and the bottom line which will then be assessed by the Group Lead to ensure consistency of the approval process. You will then receive your Healthy Workplaces Standard Certificate.

Unlike other National Well-being Badges, there is no monetary cost to applying for or achieving the standard. There will a cost of time and resource within each different organisation, but the idea is to participate and engage with others in the most cost-effective manner as much as possible.

Jean Palmer, Group HR Manager from Image Data commented:

“The Healthy Workplaces standard will clearly indicate an employer’s commitment towards tackling health and well-being concerns within your own organisation and will identify the employer as an organisation that promotes a supportive culture. It may also help raise the organisation’s profile, improve staff turnover and absence, and enables organisations to develop better working relations and best practice from other local organisations”

Kate van der Sluis, Managing Partner of Humber HR People, concluded:

“We are delighted to be leading the Humber Healthy Workplaces Standard and offering our support to participating organisations. I firmly believe that working to support employees holistically throughout their working lives is a no brainer in terms of boosting productivity in our region”.
